چکیده

BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to elucidate the prognostic significance of the pretreatment metabolic tumor volume (MTV) in patients with piriform sinus carcinoma treated by radiation-based therapy. METHODS This retrospective study included 100 patients with piriform sinus carcinomas who had received treatment by radiation-based therapy. The MTV values were obtained from pretreatment positron emission tomography (PET). The association between clinical factors, including the MTV, and survival was analyzed. RESULTS Kaplan-Meier estimates revealed the 5-year disease-free survival (DFS) rates were significantly poorer for patients with a high MTV compared to those with a low MTV. In the multivariate analysis, MTV (p < .001), nodal metastasis (p = .011), and applied chemotherapy regimen (p = .004) were found to be independent prognostic factors for DFS. CONCLUSION The locoregional MTV is a prognostic factor for DFS in patients with piriform sinus carcinoma treated by radiation-based therapy. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Treatment Results and Prognostic Indicators in Thymic Epithelial Tumors: A Clinicopathological Analysis of 45 Patients

Background: Thymomas are rare epithelial tumors arising from thymus gland. This study aims at investigating the clinical presentation, prognostic factors and treatment outcome of forty five patients with thymoma and thymic carcinoma. Methods: Forty-five patients being histologically diagnosed with thymoma or thymic carcinoma that were treated and followed-up at a tertiary academic hospital duri...

Predictive and Prognostic Value of Metabolic Tumor Volume (MTV) in Patients with Laryngeal Carcinoma Treated by Radiotherapy (RT) / Concurrent Chemoradiotherapy (CCRT)

PURPOSE To evaluate the predictive and prognostic value of pretreatment metabolic tumor volume (MTV) in patients with treated by radiotherapy (RT) or concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT). METHODS We reviewed the records of 118 patients with newly diagnosed laryngeal carcinoma, who had been treated by RT or CCRT. Pretreatment positron emission tomography (PET) was performed, and MTV values were...

Small cell carcinoma of the pyriform sinus successfully treated with concurrent chemo-radiotherapy

BACKGROUND Primary small cell carcinomas (SCCs) are uncommon in extrapulmonary sites and account for only 2.5% to 5.0% of all SCCs. SCCs in the pyriform sinus are rare and there is little information regarding this disease, especially on therapeutics. Herein, we present a case of successfully treated SCC in the right pyriform sinus that occurred in a patient with small cell lung carcinoma (SCLC...

The importance of the optimal volume in the treatment of locally recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma; brachytherapy or stereotactic radiotherapy?

Introduction: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is commonly known as a radiosensitive tumor with the initial good response to radiation. Despite the improved outcome in loco regional control by the introduction of combining treatment, modern radiotherapy techniques and enhanced imaging studies, local recurrent after primary treatment with rate ranges from 15-58% in 5 years, stil...

Primary tumor volume of nasopharyngeal carcinoma: significance for recurrence and survival.

BACKGROUND Primary tumor volume (PTV) is known to be a significant prognostic factor in malignant tumor. There have been several studies of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) relating tumor volume to treatment outcome. Our study was designed to evaluate the effect of PTV on treatment outcomes in NPC treated with radiotherapy (RT)/concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) or CCRT with adjuvant chemotherap...
